RGGOs

The RGGO (Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin) certificates is a similar certificate to its electricity counterpart the REGO. The GGCS (Green Gas Certificate Scheme) issues RGGOs from registered green gas generators. Each RGGO certificate corresponds to 1MWh (megawatthour) of green gas injected into the grid. GGCS certificates can be redeemed on the GGCS electronic registry to act as documentation and proof of using or supplying gas from a green source. A gas supplier can allocate a set amount to a customer and can provide proof of a green tariff coming from a green source. RGGOs however do not track the physical flow of gas but can be used in making claims of sourcing from a green site. The RGGO certificates are matched against the gas withdrawn from the distribution network. RGGO certificate redeemed or retired cannot be sold or retired again, hence double counting of these certificates is not possible.

REDII

The government provide financial incentives at the point of injection of biomethane. The NDRHI and GGSS are support schemes. RGGOs are able to be come from productions supported by the government. It can be claimed that these RGGOs are from a production that was supported by the government and otherwise wouldn’t exist. GGCS RGGOs include a label to disclose production support, this is visible to traders and end users when buying or cancelling RGGO certificates Payments are made after every quarter of production.

In July 2021 the second version of RED (REDII) (Renewable Energy Directive) came into force. The UK government is not aligning itself with REDII and so RGGOs don’t fully meet REDII standard. The type of gas in the UK that RGGOs represent or come from are mostly from biomethane productions. If the green gas meets the Scheme Rules requirement to be from a renewable source then RGGO certificates can be generated. Gas such as bio-propane also has RGGO certificates attributed to it. Macht Renewables offers bespoke RGGO certificates sourced from productions around the UK.

Despite these diverse developments, developments in fossil fuel systems almost entirely eliminated any wind turbine systems larger than supermicro size. In the early 1970s, however, anti-nuclear protests in Denmark spurred artisan mechanics to develop microturbines of 22 kW.
