REGOs

The UK used to be part of a scheme in the European Union to validate proof of green flow, however since the UK is no longer part of the European Union, a separate REGO certificate is used to Guarantee of Origin certificates in Europe. They cannot be exported or redeemed in Europe, however certain types of European Guarantee of Origin certificates can be redeemed in the UK until April 2023.

A REGO (Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin) is a certificate similar to the Guarantee of Origin certificate but used in the United Kingdom. Renewable electricity Generators in the UK if registered with Ofgem can produce an amount of these certificates corresponding to their power output. REGO certificates provide transparency on the electricity supplied coming from the National Grid. For 1MWh (megawatt hour) of renewable electricity produced one REGO certificate is issued by Ofgem to the generator of that electricity. The number of REGO certificates available matches the exact amount of renewable electricity produced and put into the National Grid. Energy supplier and corporates are the main buyers and redeemers of these certificates. REGO certificates are redeemed on an electrical registry, once only so double counting cannot occur.
