REC or Renewable Energy Certificates are certificates produced by renewable electricity generators that can be used to prove the green or renewable source of the electricity that someone is buying. Each REC certificate counts for 1MWh of renewable electricity produced and can be used for sustainability and environmental reports. They work the same way as I-RECs, Guarantees of Origin but are used in the United States
RECs are redeemed on an electronic registry and can only be done so once; this disables any possibility of double counting. End user corporates and electricity companies can use these certificates to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and prove the electricity they are buying is green. RECs be used for voluntary Scope 2 emissions. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scope 2 Guidance includes Guarantees of Origin, RECs, and I-RECs as possibilities of tracking and documenting the renewable electricity used or supplied.
